Why I Chose to Tell Stories with My Candles

I sometimes wonder if people think it’s an odd choice?

Candles are usually just… candles, aren’t they? A scent. A vibe. A pretty jar on a shelf.

But to me, that was never enough.

Because a candle is never just a candle.

It’s a ritual!

Think about it. When you’ve had a long day and you finally sit down, there’s something almost sacred about striking the match. The small flare of light. The first curl of smoke. The gentle exhale as the flame steadies. The smell when you blow out the match.

Lighting often feels like a pause.
A shift.
A small declaration that this moment matters.

Some of us light one while we work, and it becomes a companion at the desk. Some burn them while cooking, reading, bathing, grieving, celebrating. We use them to soften a room. To make a space feel held. To remind ourselves of something beautiful.

And scent… scent is powerful.

It carries memory. It carries feeling. It transports you. One fragrance can take you straight back to a childhood kitchen, a lover’s jumper, a summer evening, a forest walk. Scent doesn’t just smell nice, it tells a story in your body before your mind even catches up.

So for me, the stories were already there.

Every candle already holds fragments of our lives within it.

And as an artisan, I honestly put my whole heart into the making. My partner pours each candle by hand in our workroom, to be fair he’s become rather brilliant at the science of it all! The wax temperatures, the percentages, the curing times. There’s something beautiful about that, craft meeting care.

I print every label myself. Cut them on my trusty, well worn, guillotine. We stick them onto the jars together. Box them carefully. Seal them with our Wild Goddess wax stamp (which I LOVE!) Isn't there just something fabulous about a wax seal! :)

Nothing is outsourced.
Nothing is mass produced.
It’s all done from about 3 rooms from where I live.

So how could I not give them stories?

The stories are my babies.

When we create or discover a new fragrance, I don’t rush it. I sit with it. Sometimes for days. I burn it in silence. I walk with it in my thoughts. And slowly it begins to speak.

It stirs something.

I can feel the world forming before I’ve even written a word. The atmosphere. The time of day. The season. The characters at the centre of it. The old folklore that might weave through the edges. The lesson hidden beneath the surface.

The name usually comes in a flash, and I’ve learnt to trust that. Even when it makes absolutely no sense to anyone else. Intuition has never steered me wrong, even if it has made me look slightly mad at times.

And then the magic deepens. Oh I do this bit so much!!

I can see it. Sense it. Almost step into it.

A whole world built around scent and feeling, and honestly it is so beautiful.

We live in a world that can be so heavy. There is so much noise, so much stress, so much anger and anxiety swirling around us daily. We scroll, we rush, we absorb far more than we were ever meant to.

And somewhere along the way, we forget to let the magic in.

We forget that we need moments of enchantment.
We forget that imagination isn’t childish, it’s soul medicine.
We forget that story is how humans have always made sense of life.

Folklore, mythology, goddess tales, they were never just whimsical bedtime stories. They were how our ancestors understood the world. How they processed grief, love, fear, harvest, winter, death, rebirth.

Myth carries wisdom.
Story carries truth.
Enchantment carries hope.

And I believe we need that now more than ever.

So I chose to weave stories into my candles because I didn’t want them to just scent a room.

I wanted them to hold you.

I wanted them to offer a doorway. A moment of pause. A reminder that there is more to life than productivity and pressure. That there is depth beneath the surface. That there is beauty waiting to be noticed.

When you light one of my candles and listen to the story, I hope it feels like stepping into another realm for a short while. A softer one. A deeper one. One where the old ways still whisper and the goddess still walks quietly through the garden at dusk.

If even for a moment, you feel re-enchanted,
if you smile,
if you exhale,
if something inside you softens,

then the stories have done their work.

Creating this blend of scent and storytelling has been a dream realised for me. It’s the meeting point of everything I love so much - craft, folklore, seasonal living, mythology, imagination, heart and magic.

And for anyone who has bought a candle and wandered into my world through flame and story, thank you. Truly.

And if you’re someone sitting on an idea that feels a bit different… a bit unusual… a bit “what will people think?”, let this be your nudge.

The world is big enough for your strange and wonderful ideas.

Someone out there is waiting for the exact magic only you can create.

And enchantment?

It’s never far away.

You just have to let it in.
